海外で仕事を探す上で必須となるのが、英文の履歴書(Resume:レジュメ)。
英文履歴書の場合、日本の履歴書のように決まった書式が無いため、今までフォームに従って作成していた 私達日本人にとってはちょっとした難関と言えるかもしれません。
英文履歴書の最大ポイントは“最大限自己アピールし、自分を売り込むこと”。そして対象は、企業・店よりも“ポジション”にあります。つまり、応募先に「自分を雇いたい気持ちにさせる」ことが重要。考え方としては “自分用の広告”と言えるかもしれません。ですから、応募先によってカスタマイズするのが当たり前ですし、見栄えにもこだわります。業種によっても変わってくるので、本格的に目指している業種や企業がある場合は、該当する英文履歴書を検索して参考にすると良いでしょう。
ただし、ワーホリでアルバイトをする程度であれば、下記のサンプルに従えばおおむね大丈夫。特にバンクーバーは移民が多い街であり、英語が不自由な人を雇った経験のある店・企業も多くあります。もし心配であれば、英語学校の先生や、英語ネイティブの知人に見てもらうと良いでしょう。
また、英文履歴書の場合、カバーレターと呼ばれる「自己プロフィール文」のようなものを履歴書と一緒に添えるのが一般的です(下記参照)。
「敵を知り己を知れば百戦殆からず」と言いますが、応募先と自分のことをよくよく考え、“雇いたい気にさせる履歴書”を目指してください。
英語圏の中でも、国や業種によってアピールの仕方は変わってきます。カナダはかなり緩い方だと考えてください。他国の企業へ応募する場合は、その国の常識に従いましょう。

通常、英文履歴書にはカバーレターを添付します。
これは応募先担当者への「挨拶状」で、第一目的は応募先担当者に自分に興味を持ってもらい、履歴書を読んでもらうこと。簡潔な文章の中に、如何に自分がそのポジションに適任か、どれだけの情熱を持っているかを盛り込む必要があります。
つまり、カバーレターの内容によっては履歴書を読んでもらえず、面接にも辿り着けないこともあるのです。高度な英語力、文章能力が求められますが、“応募先へのラブレター”のようなものだと思って書いて下さい。場合によっては、プロに執筆代行を依頼する人もいる程です。
日本人には馴染みの無いシステムですが、履歴書と同じくとても重要なものだと認識しておくと良いでしょう。
アルバイト(特にレストラン、カフェなどの飲食店、日系企業)などの場合はカバーレターを必要としない所がほとんどです。現地の一般企業への就職を目指している方以外は、それほど悩む必要はありません。
