海外で仕事を探す上で必須となるのが、英文の履歴書(Resume - レジュメ)

英文履歴書の場合、日本の履歴書のように決まった書式が無いため、今までフォームに従って作成していた 私達日本人にとってはちょっとした難関と言えるかもしれません。

英文履歴書の最大ポイントは“最大限自己アピールし、自分を売り込むこと”。そして対象は、企業・店よりも“ポジション”にあります。つまり、応募先に「自分を雇いたい気持ちにさせる」ことが重要。考え方としては “自分用の広告”と言えるかもしれません。ですから、応募先によってカスタマイズするのが当たり前ですし、見栄えにもこだわります。業種によっても変わってくるので、本格的に目指している業種や企業がある場合は、該当する英文履歴書を検索して参考にすると良いでしょう。

ただし、ワーホリでアルバイトをする程度であれば、下記のサンプルに従えばおおむね大丈夫。特にバンクーバーは移民が多い街であり、英語が不自由な人を雇った経験のある店・企業も多くあります。もし心配であれば、英語学校の先生や、英語ネイティブの知人に見てもらうと良いでしょう。

また、英文履歴書の場合、カバーレターと呼ばれる「自己プロフィール文」のようなものを履歴書と一緒に添えるのが一般的です(下記参照)。

「敵を知り己を知れば百戦殆からず」と言いますが、応募先と自分のことをよくよく考え、“雇いたい気にさせる履歴書”を目指して下さい。

英語圏の中でも、国や業種によってアピールの仕方は変わってきます。カナダはかなり緩い方だと考えて下さい。他国の企業へ応募する場合は、その国の常識に従いましょう。

履歴書(Resume)

日本の履歴書との違い

  • 決まった書式が無いため、自由にカスタマイズする。
  • 応募先に該当する情報、アピールとなるポイントのみを記載する。
    (不必要な情報は書かなくて良い。)
  • 職歴・学歴などは最新のものから逆時系列的に列挙する。
  • 特別な場合を除き、性別、年齢、顔写真、国籍、宗教、家族構成、健康状態などは記載する必要がない。

一般的な内容

一般的には下記の内容で構成されるものが多いと言えます。まずは下記に従って書いてみましょう。

  1. Personal Information (名前、住所、電話番号など)
  2. Objective (希望職種、目的など)
  3. Work Experience (職歴)
  4. Education (学歴)
  5. Certification(s) (認定書・卒業証書などあれば)
  6. Skills (資格・特技など)
  7. Reference (身元照会人 - 以前の勤務先の上司や学校の担任の連絡先など)

ポイント

手書きではなく、ワープロやパソコンを使って書く

各項目を分かりやすく、明確に書く

見やすいレイアウト、フォントを心がける

見栄えを大事に

用紙は A4 サイズで白か淡い色で出来れば上質紙

応募先担当者に読む気を失わせさせたら終わりです。

自己PRは少し大げさくらいに書く

経歴詐称などの嘘はもちろんいけませんが、“言葉のあや”は許されます。経歴や経験をうまい言葉で飾り立て、最大限アピールしましょう。

職歴が無い場合:大学生や社会人になりたての若い方は、ボランティア、学校の活動などで埋め尽くすのもひとつの手段。カナダはボランティアも職業経験として認められています。

1ページ以内にいっぱいに書く

ワーホリでアルバイトなどをする場合、応募先担当者が短時間で簡単に目を通せるよう、1ページ以内に簡潔に収めると良いでしょう。また、空白だらけの履歴書は見栄えが悪いもの。本来、不必要な情報は書く必要がありませんが、ページを埋めるために書けることは全て書きましょう。

本格的な就職活動の場合はアピールできる事は全て書くこととなるため、数ページに及ぶこともあります。

カバーレター(Cover Letter)

通常、英文履歴書にはカバーレターを添付します。

これは応募先担当者への「挨拶状」で、第一目的は応募先担当者に自分に興味を持ってもらい、履歴書を読んでもらうこと。簡潔な文章の中に、如何に自分がそのポジションに適任か、どれだけの情熱を持っているかを盛り込む必要があります。

つまり、カバーレターの内容によっては履歴書を読んでもらえず、面接にも辿り着けないこともあるのです。高度な英語力、文章能力が求められますが、“応募先へのラブレター”のようなものだと思って書いて下さい。場合によっては、プロに執筆代行を依頼する人もいる程です。

日本人には馴染みの無いシステムですが、履歴書と同じくとても重要なものだと認識しておくと良いでしょう。

アルバイト(特にレストラン、カフェなどの飲食店、日系企業)などの場合はカバーレターを必要としない所がほとんどです。現地の一般企業への就職を目指している方以外は、それほど悩む必要はありません。

通常カバーレターは以下のような内容で構成されます。

  1. 名前、住所、電話番号など
  2. 希望するポジション
  3. 応募の目的
  4. 資格・特技など

ポイント

宛名は出来るだけ担当者の名前にする。
分からない場合は電話で問い合わせても良い。どうしても分からない場合は“To whom it may concern”“Dear Hiring Manager” などにしておく

目的や希望職種を明確に書く

内容は相手先の企業や応募するポジションに合わせた内容にする
